Sarah W. Humston

Sarah Watson Humston, 96, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson.

Born Oct. 3, 1911, at La Grange Farm in Jefferson County, she was the daughter of James Ernest Watson Sr. and Mazie B. (Ramey) Watson.

Mrs. Humston retired in 1977 after 30 years with the Jefferson County clerks office in Charles Town.

She was a life-time member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town and was a graduate of Charles Town High School, class of 1930.

She was a member of the Jefferson County Chapter DAR, Charles Town Women’s Club, Jefferson County Historical Society and AARP.

She is survived by two nieces, Sarah A. “Sally” Ware and husband Buddy, of Martinsburg, and Mary E. Miller and husband Donnie, of Charles Town; one nephew, James E. “Jay” Watson III and wife Barbara, of Charles Town; six great-nieces, Catherine Mayle, Mildred House, Elizabeth Ruffner, Marika Milburn, Jennifer Miller and Rachel Silvious; and eight great-nephews, Stewart Ware, Matthew Ware, Wesley Ware, Nathan Ware, Robert Miller, Aaron Watson, Adam Watson and Ethan Watson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Franklin Humston, who died March 24, 1964; and one brother, James Ernest “Jim” Watson Jr.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, with the Reverend Richard Kroll officiating. Hymns: "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace". Interment was at Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town, WV.  Pallbearers: Stewart Ware, Mathew Ware, Wesley Ware, Nathan Ware, Robert Miller, Aaron Watson, Adam Watson and Ethan Watson.  Honorary Pallbearers: John Ott, Donald Clendening and Roger Ramey.

Friends were received from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, February, 23, 2008 at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home.
