Born Aug. 22, 1929, in Charles Town, he was the son of John Ralph Hoffmaster and Mary (Ramey) Hoffmaster.
Mr. Hoffmaster retired from the U.S. Air Force, as a master sergeant and had served during the Korea and Vietnam conflicts.
He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Charles Town.
John was a graduate of Charles Town High School, class of 1947, where he was class president. He attended Shepherd College and American University.
He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV); a member of AARP; and a member of the Charles Town High School Alumni.
He is survived by his son, John David Hoffmaster and wife Vivian, of Charles Town; grandson, John Douglas Hoffmaster; brother, Richard Hoffmaster and wife Dawn, of Falling Waters; mother-in-law, Burla Tenney; and one niece, Laurie Schneider, of Middleburg, Fla.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, JoAnn Hoffmaster, who died June 24, 2000.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, with Rev. Richard Kroll officiating. Interment will be at Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home.
