James F. Whittington
James F. Whittington, 87, of Ranson, died Friday, Jan. 19,
2007, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born May 14, 1919, in Charles Town, he was the son of William W. Whittington and
Minnie (Painter) Whittington.
Mr. Whittington retired as superintendent of the Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles
Town, after 25 years.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where he was in the Builders
Class and Couples Fellowship of the church.
James was a life member of VFW Memorial Post No. 3522, of Charles Town; a life
member of DAV, of Martinsburg; a member of Jackson-Perks American Legion Post
No. 71, of Charles Town; and a life member of Harpers Ferry-Bolivar District
Veterans Group.
Mr. Whittington served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
At the time of his death he was survived by his wife of 64 years, Martha M. (Pentz) Whittington, at home;
daughter, Judith A. Whittington, at home; sons, Donald L. Whittington, at home
and James F. Whittington and wife Mamie, of Middleway; grandson, James A.
Whittington and wife, Stephanie; sister, Lottie Rickel, of Charles Town; two
brothers, William "Bill" Whittington, of Martinsburg, and John Whittington and
wife Marian, of York, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice
Kidwell, Cora Hine, and Mabel Smallwood; and one brother, Melvin S. Whittington.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Edge Hill
Cemetery, Charles Town, with the Rev. Richard Kroll of the Charles Town Asbury
United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangement were made by the Melvin
T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home.
