Hilda V. Kable

Hilda Virginia Marshall Kable, 91, of Charles Town, died at Shenandoah Health Center, Thursday, June 12, 2008.

Born Dec. 26, 1916, in Charles Town, she was the daughter of the late James Riddle and Edna Locke Burns Marshall.

Hilda was a 1934 graduate of Charles Town High School and a 1936 graduate of Vogue Beauty School, of Baltimore. Following graduation, she opened and operated the Modern Beauty Shop at 211 West Washington Street, in Charles Town, upstairs over her father’s hardware store, known at the time as Burns and Marshall Hardware Store. Her younger sister, Louise, finished her courses at Vogue Beauty School in 1938, and joined the business. Hilda was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church for 80 years and sang in the sanctuary choir for many of those years. As a teenager and young adult, she participated in “Mr. Littge’s Band,” playing guitar. Hilda had been a member of Beeline Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, where she assisted in research of history and graves of Revolutionary Patriots, also a member of Daughters of the Confederacy.

A dedicated wife, mother and homemaker, Hilda’s interests covered quilting, crocheting and other types of needlework; gardening, canning and flowers; genealogy and reading. Other creative talents included painting designs on antique chairs, caning and refurnishing furniture.

She married Donald McCarthy Kable on April 6, 1938. At the time of her death she was survived by three sons: Gary Marshall Kable and wife Janice, of Charles Town, Donald Hartman Kable and wife Janie, of Sharpsburg, Md., and Emory Allder Kable and wife Sammy, of Ranson; one daughter, Elinor Duderer Kable Manzuk and husband Paul, of Charles Town. In addition, she had 11 grandchildren, Carolyn Arnold and D.J., of Winchester, Stephanie Spencer and Phil, of Harpers Ferry, Angie Johnson, of Shepherdstown, Paula Moessner and Bill, of Barboursville, Va., Beth Manzuk and fiance Pete Trivero, of Shenandoah Junction, Barbara Manzuk, of Charles Town, Ashley and Holly Kable, of Leesburg, Va., Michelle and Stefan Ohmke, of Falls Church, Va., Chad and Ann Kable, of Keedysville, Md., Amy Fincham and Scott, of Summit Point and Travis Kable, of Martinsburg; 12 great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Kelsey Stoneberger, Sarah and Samuel Spencer, Brittany Kirkpatrick, Blake Johnson, Marie Johnson, Stephen Arnold, Georgia and Naila Ohmke, and Madyson and Julie Finchem; two sisters, Ann Louise Marshall Pine and husband Edward, of Winchester, and Doris Deborah Marshall Cline, of Charles Town; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald McCarthy Kable; and one sister, Jean Marshall O’Bannon.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2008, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 110 W. North Street, Charles Town, with the Reverend Richard Kroll officiating.   Hymns: "A Mighty Fortress is our God", "The church is one Foundation" and "Amazing Grace".   Interment was at the Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town, WV.  Pallbearers: Travis Kable, Rick Feagans, Pete Trivero, Bill Moessner, Steve Cline, Andrew Wilt, Ed Oot, Jim Cline, Wayne Cline and Ashley Kable.

The family received visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at Melvin T. Strider’s Colonial Funeral Home in Ranson, WV.
