Local turkey hunter is killed
Herald Hart Bennett, 26, of Charles Town, was shot about 8:30 Saturday morning in the Fox's Hollow area of Hampshire County, said DNR Conservation Officer Michael Lott.
Bennett was hit in the right side with a rifle bullet fired by 61-year-old David Clarke Butler of Inwood.
The two men were hunting from the same hunting camp.
Lott says Butler was shooting at a turkey and missed. The bullet hit Bennett, who was walking on a roadway below.
The DNR says heavy brush, rain and fog contributed to the shooting. Officials said charges are expected to be filed.
Bennett was a 2001 graduate of Jefferson High School and a 2006 graduate of West Virginia University. He also was a 2007 alumnus of the Missouri Auction School. He was employed with The Bennett Agency in Charles Town.
Bennett also was active with agricultural groups and raised cattle.
