Dorothy R. Snyder

Dorothy “Dot” Russell Snyder, 86, of Ranson, passed away January 19, 2008, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

Born April 18, 1921, in Berryville, Va., she was the daughter of John Thomas Russell and Anna Wynkoop Russell.

She is survived by her daughters, Wallis Anne Magaha and husband John, of Ranson and Mary Susan Sharp and husband Richard, of Morton, Ill.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Magaha O’Lonney, Jeffrey Magaha, Faith Sharp and Julie Sharp; one sister, Peggy Hatfield, of Culpeper, Va.; and two brothers, John T. Russell, of Berryville, Va., and George R. Russell, of Boyce, Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Linson Snyder; sister, Anne R. Ellis; and brother, Donald Russell.

She was a longtime member of the Summit Point Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a 57-year charter member of the Summit Point CEOS Club, which she helped organize and was a former 4-H leader of the Summit Point Busy Bees 4-H Club. She was a past member of the UDC and the Jefferson County Historical Society.

She previously worked as a volunteer and a staff member of the Old Charles Town Library for 13 years. She wrote a column for several years for the Martinsburg Journal. Later, she wrote the Summit Point column for the Spirit of Jefferson from 1994 to the present.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at the Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, with the Reverend Richard Kroll officiating. Hymns: "Abide with Me" and "In the Garden".  Interment was held at the Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town. Pallbearers: Richard Sharp, John Magaha, Jeffrey Magaha, Jimmy O'Looney, Kevin Snyder and Gene Magaha.  Honorary pallbearer: Nick Snyder.

Friends were received from 7 to 9 p.m. on January 21, 2008 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Old Charles Town Library or the South Jefferson Public Library.
